Journalist Beren Cross has claimed that Brenden Aaronson will be disappointed not to be awarded a goal on his debut for Leeds United.
The Whites began the new Premier League season with a 2-1 win over Wolves at the weekend. Daniel Podence opened the scoring for the away team before Rodrigo levelled things.
Then in the 74th minute with the game still level, it looked as though Aaronson had scored the winner, only for Rayan Ait-Nouri to eventually be credited with an own goal.
While speaking about the incident on a LeedsLive Facebook stream, Cross said that the Leeds man – who joined in the summer from Red Bull Salzburg – would not be happy to see the goal taken away from him.
He said: “It looked like such a simple Brenden Aaronson tap-in, we didn’t really think much of it. And then it’s since come to light that it has gone down as an own goal.
“So it takes a little bit of the shine off. I’m sure Brenden will be disappointed with that. But ultimately, I think the fact he was in the right position and the move that actually created the goal is what is most impressive and heartening.”

Speaking after the game about his debut (via Daily Mail), Aaronson certainly seemed keen to claim the goal as his own, saying: “I touched it in there. I was in there and I thought it came off my shin somewhere in there, so I’m taking credit for it.”
With those comments in mind, Cross is probably right to suggest the midfielder will be disappointed now he has to wait before officially scoring his first goal for his new club – and it’s not hard to see why, with the player millimetres from making contact with the ball just before it hits the back of the net.
He can, however, be pretty happy with his display. Indeed, in the LeedsLive player ratings, the American was given an 8/10 for his efforts and was called ‘the most effective Leeds player in attack’.
