Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that he would not expect Leeds United to sign Cody Gakpo this summer.

French outlet FootMercato stated a couple of months ago that Leeds were monitoring the progress of Gakpo this summer as they hunt for a replacement for Raphinha, who parted ways with the club earlier in the summer.

However, fellow Premier League outfit Manchester United have also shown an interest in the winger.

Gakpo was in inspired form for PSV last season as he made 47 appearances in all competitions and chipped in with a total of 36 goal contributions, which is seemingly what has caught the eye of Premier League clubs.

However, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that Leeds are looking for a player who plays primarily down the middle of the pitch, which is why he is expecting the Whites to steer clear of signing the Dutchman.

He said: “I’ve been told to expect that Leeds would sign a player that’s more likely to play through the middle as opposed to out wide. So, given that, I wouldn’t really be expecting Gakpo to land.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

Leeds only have Patrick Bamford and the inexperienced pair of Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood as centre-forward options, and last season was a disaster when Bamford got injured as he was only able to feature nine times, so Jesse Marsch might well look to add another attacker with more first-team experience to prevent this issue from happening again.

Gakpo did have a brilliant goalscoring campaign last term, but he is not a striker, so it will be interesting to see if they splash the cash on him this summer given Jones’ comments.

Armando Broja and Arnaud Kalimuendo are two names that have been heavily linked with a move to Leeds this summer, and both would seem to be more appropriate options for Marsch, as winger Luis Sinisterra has already been added to the squad following Raphinha’s departure.
