Journalist Charlie Eccleshare has claimed that Leeds United have been mentioned in regard to Harry Winks this summer.
Winks was mainly left on the fringes last season for Spurs, as he made 19 appearances in the Premier League for the north London side, with just nine of those coming from the start.
Although Leeds have been mentioned as a potential destination for Winks this summer, Spurs reporter Eccleshare spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he is not sure if the Whites’ interest will go much further – though it will be interesting to see who ramps up their interest in the 26-year-old.
He said: “Everton were interested then cooled that interest. Leeds is a name I’ve heard mentioned, but as I’ve reported, I don’t think that’s going to go any further. So it’s interesting as to who really pushes for him.”
Would you take Winks at Leeds?
TIF Thoughts on Eccleshare’s comments…
Leeds have brought in six new players this summer and four of those have been central midfielders as Jesse Marsch looks to deal with life after Kalvin Phillips, but the fact they are linked with Winks suggests that they are on the hunt for another midfielder before the window ends.
That said, their interest does predate Phillips’ departure, so perhaps he was simply further down their list before securing other targets such as Tyler Adams.
However, Winks – hailed “top-quality” by Paul Robinson – could be a cheap option for Marsch because he is evidently not wanted by Spurs, so Antonio Conte might be keen to get him out the door by any means necessary. Meanwhile, he has played 128 games in the Premier League, so he could add some top-flight experience to a squad that has been criticised for being too threadbare.
And while Eccleshare has claimed that he is not sure if the transfer will progress any further, this might not be the worst news for the Leeds faithful, as they would surely prefer players through the door who can make an instant impact, and with Winks featuring sporadically last term, he might not be the player they need right away.
