Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Leeds United are interested in signing FC Zurich forward Wilfried Gnonto this summer – but a deal is not close at present.

It has been reported that Leeds are interested in signing Gnonto as Jesse Marsch looks to strengthen his attacking options.

Patrick Bamford had injury woes last season for Leeds and was forced off on Saturday in the first half of the match against Southampton, and while Joe Gelhardt was also nursing an injury, meaning Daniel James had to come on and lead the line.

Despite Leeds showing interest in Gnonto this summer, Romano spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that a move to Elland Road is not something that is close to completion.

“It was really complicated for the Dutch clubs who approached Zurich in the last few weeks. And so, Leeds are interested, but it’s not something close to being completed yet,” Romano said.

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

Gnonto is an 18-year-old striker who produced impressive stats last season for FC Zurich, finding the back of the net 10 times and chipping in with five assists across 36 games in all competitions, so he could be a good option for Marsch up top.

Due to Gnonto not having experience playing in any of the top European leagues and also having under 12 months remaining on his current contract, he could be available for Leeds to buy at a reduced price, as the Swiss side may not be too keen to let him leave on a free at the end of this season.

However, at just 18 years old, there could be a lot of pressure on him to lead the line for Leeds in the Premier League if Bamford’s injury that he picked up against the Saints points to another long-term issue, so Marsch might be keen to bring in someone with a bit more experience to his squad before the transfer window ends.
