Journalist Phil Hay feels Patrick Bamford should be fit to start and maybe play the full 90 minutes of Leeds United’s Premier League opener.

After scoring 17 goals and assisting a further eight in Leeds’ first campaign back in the top flight in 16 years, Bamford was unable to build upon a breakout season as he underwent an injury-riddled spell last year.

He has played  just four times since last September competitively but has been involved in pre-season for Jesse Marsch and scored twice in the final friendly against Cagliari at Elland Road last week.

His goals will be a much-needed boost for the club and Hay feels as if he must surely be fit for a full 90 minutes.

Speaking on the Phil Hay Show he said:

(1:00:25) “You’ll also notice with Bamford that they’ve been really careful with him right the way through the summer, kept him out certain games, held him back a little bit in others.

“But 90 minutes on Sunday, Marsh said he doesn’t think he’s still quite 100% Bamford, but he can’t be too far off and it does feel as if, without me wanting to tempt fate in the way that I always do, it does as if they’ve just about managed this rate to get him ready to start.”

TIF Thoughts on Bamford and Leeds…

Will Leeds be sucked into another relegation fight this season?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The Whites netted 62 goals during the 2020/21 campaign but in the absence of their star striker that tally tumbled to 42 and with their frontline unable to bail out their defensive issues their position in the table suffered and almost cost them their top-flight status.

The 28-year-old will be hoping to rediscover the form he showed a couple of seasons ago  and considering the side failed to score in 11 of the games he missed last term his return will be more than welcome.
