Journalist Beren Cross has slammed Jesse Marsch for his poor choices regarding substitutions during Leeds United’s recent draw.

This weekend, the Whites travelled to play Southampton in their second Premier League game of the season but managed to squander a two-goal lead as they drew the match 2-2.

Indeed, a Rodrigo double had put Leeds ahead only for Joe Aribo and Kyle Walker-Peters to level the scores in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Speaking on the LeedsLive Facebook channel after the game, Cross stated that Marsch’s inability to make the right changes in time to halt the shifting momentum of the game was what allowed Southampton their route back in.

The journalist explained (5:28): “Today, he has delayed in making them [substitutions]. At least in my opinion, I feel that that delay is what’s cost Leeds the game.

“You could see Southampton coming back at Leeds, the change in momentum. And Leeds had to make those changes. They were clearly fading they were losing control of the match.

“You have the subs available, you have the experience and the quality on the bench to use. He didn’t use it soon enough. And I think especially [Mateusz] Klich and  [Lui] Sinisterra came on far too late in the game. And [Adam] Forshaw as well. I would have had Forshaw on much earlier to bring some control.

“So I think that’s the big reason for me as to why that’s happened. I think it is down to Marsch and the delay in the substitutions, unfortunately.”

TIF thoughts on Jesse Marsch and Leeds…

Interestingly enough, Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl opted to make two changes after just 61 minutes. Aribo and Armstrong came off the bench and then proceeded to combine together to create the Saints’ first goal.

Marsch, on the other hand, was less proactive. Apart from making an enforced swap in the first half due to Patrick Bamford’s injury, he kept his powder dry until the 84th minute – by which stage, the scores had already been levelled.

In a tale of two managers, it’s not hard to see why Cross is so frustrated with the Leeds boss. It certainly does seem as though Marsch was slow to the change in momentum that had been initiated by Hasenhuttl just after the hour mark.
