Journalist Phil Hay has been discussing Matuesz Klich’s future which still seems very much up in the air.

Reports from the 32-year-old’s native Poland have emerged suggesting the player is ‘determined’ to leave Leeds this summer amid concerns over his squad role.

Klich arrived at Elland Road back in 2017 coming in from FC Twente but it was soon shipped back to the Eredivisie on loan at FC Utrecht before helping the Whites secure promotion back to the Premier League.

He played a hand in nine goals as the Yorkshire side reached ninth in their first year back in the top flight and despite being one of Jesse Marsch’s most used players last term the arrivals in midfield of Marc Roca, Tyler Adams, Darko Gyabi and the more attack-minded Brenden Aaronson have seemingly raised concerns for the Pole.

Speaking on the Phil Hay Show on Klich’s future, Hay said:(1:04:17)

“I wouldn’t expect Kilch to be in the starting lineup on Saturday and even the question I suppose of whether he’s going to be one of Marsh’s go-to players off the bench more often than not and if he isn’t, the World Cup is coming up. He wants to go with Poland and he’s also at an age where you know he needs to get as much football as he can given that he’s not going to last forever.

“There’s a bit of talk in Holland about Utrecht being interested obviously a club he’s played for before. I would keep an eye on that one. Marsch said to us you know I don’t particularly want him to go, he’s not somebody I want to get rid of, I like having him around. But their definitely was the caveat of I understand that he wants to go to the World Cup with Poland and I think It’s similar to what you’ve heard them say previously, you know a little bit about Raphinha that thing of I don’t want to lose him, but I’m fairly realistic that it might happen.

“That decision there is going to have to be A, is there a club Klich wants to go to? Is it prudent to lose a midfielder role or do you actually need him? But ultimately, it does feel like he is becoming more and more peripheral.

TIF Thoughts on Klich and Leeds…

Is Klich good enough to play for Leeds still?

Yes

Yes

No

No

The 40-cap Poland maestro, who was hailed as an ‘unsung hero’ by David Prutton, only made two appearances off the bench in pre-season and with two years left on his Leeds contract now would seem like the opportune time for those at Thorp Arch to wave their goodbyes.

At 32 it may well be their last chance to recoup any sort of fee and while a loan deal to FC Utrecht has been mooted perhaps a buyer will come in to take Klich off the club’s hands permanently.

it’s such a shame that Klich has lost his way at Leeds. I think he’s the type of player that has great difficulty lifting his game when his confidence drops. His problems probably began even before Marsch took over. If he did manage to play at his best again, and maintained that level consistently, he would keep his position in the first team pending injury. As it is I think he feels it’s time to move on – it’s a very demanding league and at age 32 it’s hard to perform as someone ten years younger.
