Journalist Luke Edwards has been speaking on the Transfer Gossip Daily podcast about Everton’s Anthony Gordon following the monster bid reportedly lodged for his services.
News broke over the last few days about how Everton have received a £40m bid for their academy wonderkid, despite the winger having only started 32 top-flight league games in his career.
Gordon certainly has potential given his big role in this Everton side at such a tender age, however, if Chelsea want him to come in and help their goalscoring issues – they only scored twice from 16 shots on Sunday – then they may be in for a shock, as Gordon has only netted four goals in 51 Premier League appearances.
Edwards, however, believes that this leak of a bid and talk of an exit may all be down to Gordon wanting to get a better contract at Everton.
He said: “I just think the Anthony Gordon link, in particular, it’s just not really a player they [Chelsea] need, they’re spending £40m on another wide forward.
Should Everton sell Gordon for £40 million?
Yes!
No!
“It is a lot of money, and he’s had one good season in the Premier League, Anthony Gordon, and I suspect he’s just after a new contract at Everton. I can’t see Everton letting him go.”
TIF Thoughts on Gordon’s future…
It would undoubtedly be a major blow to Everton and Frank Lampard if the sale of Gordon was sanctioned in the remaining days of the transfer window as it would see them lose one of their own while not affording them a lot of time to find a suitable replacement.
However, given Everton’s long-term struggles with Financial Fair Play regulations and a new stadium on the horizon, getting £40m for a player they paid absolutely nothing for could well be an offer too good to turn down.
This may test Everton’s resolve. They could take the £40m and reinvest it into the squad, because if they end up getting relegated or Gordon has a below-par season, it’s very unlikely any club would be bidding anywhere near £40m for him next summer. Alternatively, they could back their academy graduate and offer him a bumper new deal, so it is certainly something that has to be weighed up at Goodison Park.
