Journalist Alex Crook has claimed that Conor Gallagher has been on Everton’s shortlist throughout the summer transfer window.

Everton have been keen on luring Gallagher to Goodison Park this summer and Football Insider reported a month ago that the Toffees made an official approach to sign him.

However, Everton are not the only top-flight side interested in Gallagher, as according to reports, Newcastle United have now made him their top target, after having two bids rejected for Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

With Everton being linked to Gallagher this summer, Crook spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he has been on their shortlist since the start of the summer.

He said: “They do want a [number] 10. Conor Gallagher has been on their list since right at the start of the summer.

“I think they’re going to have to probably dip into the loan market.

“But obviously Conor Coady is a loan deal, so I think they can only make one more domestic loan – that does hamstring them a little bit.”

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

Gallagher, who was described by Thomas Tuchel as a ‘big asset’, could be persuaded to join Everton this summer because of the influence Frank Lampard could have on his career, with the likes of Mason Mount now an established top-flight international, so he could see his path heading a similar way.

The English midfielder came off the bench on Sunday in the 85th minute, as well as in the 99th minute on the opening day of the season, so he might be keen to force a move away from Stamford Bridge in order to find more regular game time, particularly with the World Cup just a matter of months away.

However, he might not like the idea of a temporary move due to him already spending time on loan with three different clubs, and with Crook claiming that Everton might have to go down the loan route, this could make it difficult to get Gallagher through the door.
