Everton have to sign players before the transfer window closes on 1st September, after earning zero points out of a possible six from their opening two Premier League fixtures.

That is according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who was speaking to This is Futbol about the club’s potential transfer business, heading into the final two weeks of the transfer window.

There had been fears that Everton would not be able to spend big in the summer transfer market, due to Financial Fair Play restrictions, after spending £370m over the last three years under owner Farhad Moshiri.

However, the club have managed to sign five players during the transfer window so far, including the purchase of Lille and Belgium midfielder Amadou Onana, for a reported £33m.

But Jones believes that whilst the club’s transfer window hasn’t been as bad as first feared, the club still need to make additions to the squad, in order to improve the side’s performance.

“It’s not been quite as bad I think as some people feared, but they just seem blunt.

“And I think that that’s the big fear right now.

“They have to sign players.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments

We believe that Jones is correct and that Frank Lampard needs additions to his squad this summer, to prevent a repeat of last season’s relegation battle or worse.

At the moment, the club are crying out for the signing of a striker, after the departure of last season’s top goal scorer Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur for £50m, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s training injury in pre-season, leaving only Solomón Rondón as the only senior out-and-out striker at the club.

Therefore, whilst we agree that the Toffees’ summer could have been much worse, the club still desperately need additions this summer, otherwise it could be a very long season for the blue half of Merseyside.
