Injury specialist Ben Dinnery has suggested that Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury could be worse than reported, as the forward is set to miss the side’s Premier League opener this weekend.
Everton have not had the best of luck so far this summer, as after losing star man Richarlison, they now face further problems with Calvert-Lewin set to miss some game time due to an injury he picked up in training.
Dinnery claimed that the striker’s injury could be worse than originally reported as he was suspected to be out for the Chelsea clash, which has since been backed up by manager Frank Lampard during his pre-match press conference.
Speaking prior to Lampard’s comments, Dinnery said on the Premier FPL Injuries YouTube channel: “Dominic Calvert-Lewin had picked up a training ground injury, the extent of which is an unknown. As it currently stands, [reports say] that he is a doubt for this gameweek, the opening weekend.
“However, you understand that the severity of that problem might be a little bit worse than what’s been reported at this point. A lot of the main outlets are starting to reference that injury now and he’s certainly not part of any kind of training session today with Frank Lampard.”
TIF Thoughts on Calvert-Lewin’s injury…
Everton are already facing an uphill battle for their Premier League survival after losing Richarlison, being restricted with incomings due to their financial situation, and now, they have lost their star striker for what could be up to six weeks.
Whether Lampard’s assessment of the severity of Calvert-Lewin’s injury is also being underplayed remains to be seen, but it does seem as though it will be a while before he is back on the pitch again, and perhaps fans should not necessarily take the manager’s claim at face value based on Dinnery’s claim.
Despite missing significant time to an injury last season, Calvert-Lewin finished as the Toffees’ fourth-highest goalscorer with five across all competitions, and the club are now going to miss him for the beginning of the new campaign.
According to Transfermarkt, they only now have Salomon Rondon as a recognised striker to fill the gap until he returns, which may not fill fans with too much hope, as the Venezuelan only managed three goals in all competitions last term.
This season is going to be tough enough for Everton, but now they are missing their star striker, it is only going to get harder. They will be praying Calvert-Lewin makes a speedy recovery in time to help their cause.
