Everton still have ‘significant interest’ in Ben Brereton Diaz this summer – but could face competition from other Premier League sides, according to TalkSport’s Alex Crook.

The Toffees have been calling out for a new striker who can bag plenty of goals this summer after they lost star man Richarlison earlier in the window and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to injuries once again already this season.

While they have already signed Neal Maupay from Brighton & Hove Albion, he is not known for being a prolific goalscorer at Premier League level, which is what they desperately need. As a result, they have been linked with Brereton Diaz, but given he is currently plying his trade in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers and has not played in the top flight, he would be more of a gamble.

There could be some doubt over his potential signing after they picked up Maupay, but according to Crook, they are still very much interested in bringing in the Chilean striker, though they face competition from the likes of West Ham United.

Crook told the TalkSport GameDay podcast: “I was told there was significant interest from Everton in Ben Brereton Diaz. I think West Ham might possibly join the conversation for him as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Brereton Diaz to Everton…

While signing another forward could be difficult with Everton’s financial worries, they do need a goalscorer – something that Brereton Diaz certianly is. Considering this, it is puzzling to see why they have splashed out on Maupay, considering he has failed to hit double digits in the top flight for the last two seasons.

While Maupay has proven to be serviceable in the Premier League and Brereton Diaz has never played in the division, just last season we saw the Chilean striker pick up 22 goals in the Championship for a Blackburn side that didn’t even make the play-offs.

It is always going to be a gamble bringing in Brereton Diaz as he has never played in the Premier League, but it is surely worth taking a punt on a striker who could shine and develop into a star rather than playing it safe on a player who is unlikely to get you more than 10 goals.

If Everton do not take this chance with the Blackburn forward, it feels like another missed opportunity and something that could come back to haunt them by the end of the season.
