Journalist Dean Jones has claimed that Aston Villa could potentially look at Brendan Rodgers as a successor to Steven Gerrard amid their poor start to the season.

Aston Villa haveĀ lost four out of the opening five games and were beaten on Wednesday night by league leaders Arsenal in their latest Premier League clash.

Gerrard was appointed as Villa manager last season and had a mixed campaign after he was introduced, as he failed to make a major impact with the Villans finishing 14th in the league table.

With Villa having a disappointing start to the season, Jones spoke to GiveMeSport prior to their defeat at the Emirates Stadium and claimed that if the board decided to make a change, Rodgers could be someone on the club’s shortlist.

He said: “If they were to look elsewhere at a later date, then I think Brendan Rodgers particularly would be one that they would look at.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

The Leicester City manager went into the midweek round of fixtures sitting rock bottom of the Premier League having picked up one point from a possible 12, so Rodgers’ role as manager at his current club could also be in jeopardy if his side do not change their form around any time soon.

However, the form could be seen not to be the manager’s fault, as he has presumably not been given any sort of funds to get new players through the door this summer with no outfield signings arriving at the time of writing, so Rodgers has been left with next to no resources to help his side progress.

Villa might need a change behind the scenes in order to kickstart their season, so Rodgers could come in and make a difference given he has much more experience as a manager than Gerrard and could use his knowledge to help get the side back on track by stringing some good results together in what would be a fresh start for all concerned.

Once again an anti Villa rant about a subject that he has no knowledge of. Jones should get an old match box and write down absolutely everything he actually knows about football. The matchbox cover would remaim blank. Enough said.
