Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is looking to sign a traditional midfielder who can play in the No 8 role this summer.

That is according to Dean Jones, who was speaking to GiveMeSport about the West Midlands club’s potential transfer business heading into the remaining few weeks of the window.

Gerrard has already welcomed five players to Villa Park this summer, but the only midfielder he has acquired is former Marseille man Boubacar Kamara, who is a more defensive-minded player.

The club have also sold academy product Carney Chukwuemeka to Chelsea for around £20m this summer, with the club now requiring another player in the No 8 mould.

And Jones believes that this type of midfielder is exactly what Gerrard wants before the window shuts in September, saying: “He wants more of a traditional eight coming to the Villa midfield.

“It’s really probably the main position he’s looking at right now, is getting the right midfielder.”

TIF Thoughts on Jones’ comments…

We believe that Villa fans will agree with Gerrard in the sense that the club need a player in that position coming to Villa Park this season, and will be hoping that the club can pull off a deal for someone soon.

Speaking about signing a midfielder before the transfer window shuts, Gerrard said (via BirminghamLive): “It’s still an area we’re looking to strengthen and we want to challenge the lads that have done well for us in the last six months since we’ve been here.”

Therefore, we believe that the club should be going all-out to back their manager and provide him with the midfielder that he desires. And after their disappointing start to the Premier League season, perhaps the necessity for another arrival has just increased.
