During a recent appearance on Sky Sports, The Athletic’s Dan Bardell stated his belief that Aston Villa are most likely to sign Jan Bednarek on loan before the end of the transfer window.

The Villans have been hugely disappointing so far this season and a huge injury to new signing Diego Carlos has not helped their form defensively as they have had to call on the likes of Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa to fill in.

As a result of the injury to Carlos, the Midlands side are now going back in for another centre-back signing this window before it slams shut on 1st September to hopefully help pick up their form before the Brazilian returns.

And amid reports linking Villa to the Saints defender, Bardell recently claimed that from what he knows, Southampton’s Bednarek is the closest target to being completed, with a loan deal looming.

Bardell told Sky Sports: “I think Villa probably will get one or two in before the deadline later this week.

“I think they’ll get a centre-back in because they need to, because they lost Diego Carlos who was a big summer signing. It sounds like it will be Bednarek from Southampton on loan. From what I hear, that looks like the most likely.”

TIF Thoughts on Bednarek to Villa…

Steven Gerrard’s side are in desperate need of a new centre-back to help settle the defence in the wake of Carlos’ injury. The Brazilian could be out for a long time with his Achilles problem and depending on Mings and Konsa for the majority of the season may not cut it.

Considering they most likely do not want to splash out again on a player who as a stopgap solution, going for a loan instead is perhaps the most sensible option – and using it on a player like Bednarek could be seen as great business.

The Poland international has been a hugely important player to the Saints, making 34 appearances across all competitions last season and playing in two of their opening four games this season. He is very experienced at the top level and can definitely help bring some stability to Villa.

In the last year, he also ranks in the 95th percentile for interceptions, in the 89th for blocks and clearances and in the 87th for aerial duels won compared to other centre-backs in Europe’s top five leagues.

Villa need a quick fix, and looking at his stats and experience, there may not be much better than Bednarek in the loan market.
