Birmingham Live journalist, Ashley Preece has slammed Aston Villa centre-back Ezri Konsa for his four out of ten performance against Crystal Palace, as the Villans lost 3-1 away at Selhurst Park.
Steven Gerrard’s were unable to capitalise on their good form from their 2-1 Everton win this weekend as the midlands club lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace, in a lacklustre performance where they struggled to defend against the South London side.
One player who has since garnered criticism for his performance is Konsa, who came back into the side after new signing Diego Carlos picked up an Achilles injury, with Preece giving the Englishman a four out of ten.
Preece wrote, “Looked uneasy on his return to the starting XI and gifted a dangerous ball to Palace just moments in which could have led to the opener. Konsa also didn’t get tight enough to Zaha for the goal.
“Really struggled out there while Calum Chambers is probably wondering what he must do to get the nod. Konsa went close with a header late on but, given his standards, it was a really disappointing showing up against Palace’s attack. 4”.
TIF Thoughts on Konsa’s performance…
Despite conceding three goals and struggling to compete with Palace’s star men in Wilfried Zaha and Eberechi Eze, Preece’s poor rating of Konsa feels a little unfair, especially when you look at his stats.
While the defender did lose possession five times and failed to complete any of his three long balls, he did make two clearances and four tackles, while not being dribbled past for the entire game. He also won all six of his ground duels and both aerial duels and completed 90% of his passes, 45 out of 50. (Sofascore)
There is no doubt Villa defended poorly, but when you look at his centre-back Mings, who lost possession 14 times and received a five out of ten rating from Preece, it feels like Konsa has been done hard by.
