Journalist Charles Watts has claimed that Arsenal will sign a new winger this summer if Nicolas Pepe leaves on loan.

Of late, there have been a number of suggestions that the Gunners could bring in a new forward before the transfer window slams shut on 1st September.

However, as we head towards the final stages of the window, it remains uncertain as to whether or not that will happen. But while speaking on his YouTube channel, Watts has said that he would be shocked if Arsenal don’t bring someone new in should Pepe leave.

He explained: “I’d be stunned if Arsenal didn’t bring in a winger if you let Nicolas Pepe go. They want to bring in a winger, there’s no doubt about it.

“If Pepe goes, I cannot for the life of me think they won’t get something over the line for a winger. Because yes, Marquinhos is there; yes, he’s going to stay for the first few months of the season, but still, I’m not sure that Arsenal are really expecting Marquinhos to come in and be Bukayo Saka’s competition and cover for the first half of the season in the Premier League.

“So I’d be very, very surprised. We’ll have to wait and see. I can’t tell you who it’s going to be, this whole ‘mystery winger’, the craze that’s going around Twitter at moment. Who is the mystery winger? I can’t tell you because I don’t know.”

TIF Thoughts on Arsenal and a new winger…

What bodes well for the Premier League club is the fact that Pepe looks pretty close to joining Ligue 1 outfit Nice on loan for the season, having missed the recent match against Bournemouth, with talks regarding that deal prioritised at the weekend.

If the forward does leave, it really does sound like Mikel Arteta will see a new man arrive to replace him, which will come as exciting news to fans. But as Watts makes clear, it remains unknown as to who exactly the ‘mystery winger’ will be just yet.

Still, according to David Ornstein in The Athletic, the Gunners are keen on bringing in Pedro Neto from Wolves, so he may well be the man to replace Pepe should the Ivorian end up back in France.

It certainly looks as though there could be at least one more exit and one more incoming in north London this summer if everything goes to plan for Arsenal.
