Speaking on The Roar podcast, journalist James Copley has discussed the chances of Leon Dajaku featuring for Sunderland this evening.

Sunderland have made a bright start to their first season back in the Championship under Alex Neil, picking up four points in their opening two games, and managed to come from behind last weekend and pick up all three points.

While the Carabao Cup is not likely to be of huge importance to Neil and Sunderland this season, with survival likely to be the main aim, that is where their attention must turn to this evening as they face Sheffield Wednesday away from home.

With this competition not likely being a priority, Neil may make several changes and one could be at left wing-back, as Copley spoke about.

“He could [play], but we don’t know how fit Dajaku is, do we? Because we know he’s missed a bit of training and whatnot, so it’s an interesting one, we could see Dajaku.”

TIF Thoughts on Dajaku featuring tonight…

Thus far, Dajaku has only featured for one minute under Neil this season, which came against Bristol City at the weekend, while he wasn’t in the squad for their opening day draw at home to Coventry City, so considering this game has much less riding on it, this could be the perfect chance to get minutes into his legs.

This current PL centre-back almost signed for Sunderland back in 2015.

However, if he has missed training recently, as Copley claimed, perhaps a role off the bench could be better as it’s pointless risking his long-term fitness and a potential injury, as it’s something he does struggle with, having missed out on 13 matchday squads last season.
