Tottenham Hotspur are playing down the recent reports linking them with a move for James Maddison in the coming weeks.

This is according to Alasdair Gold who was speaking on his latest YouTube video, but he believes a move for the Leicester City man could potentially unravel later in the window.

Reports have emerged in recent days suggesting Spurs are now looking to bring in a creative midfielder now they have brought in six new faces this summer.

And it has been suggested Maddison is a player who Spurs hold an interest in having decided not to pursue a move for their former playmaker, Christian Eriksen.

Spurs have completed a lot of their business early on this summer and Gold believes this is a potential move which could develop later in the window; despite Tottenham playing it down:

(56:00) “Interestingly, Spurs really playing that down. Anyone we asked out on the tour about Maddison really played that down saying no, nothing happening there. I’d say on that one. It’s a difficult one. I said earlier in the summer made it very clear in my videos and stuff that I knew that he was on their long list of potential attacking midfielders in recent years. They like him, they chased him before he went to Leicester as well. They like Maddison.

“Only two years left on his contracts as well. I’d say for the moment. Don’t get too excited. But add in a massive caveat. And I’m going very much against what Spurs are saying. I think if he were to become available if that was a deal that could be done. I think Spurs would make a move.”

“If that situation changes, I just get the feeling Spurs would be in like a shot. So yeah, that’s one of those occasions where I’m going to say Spurs are playing it down saying there’s nothing there. But just keep an eye on it. Because I obviously was told differently as well.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

The Englishman has two years remaining on his current deal with the Foxes, however, there has been reports suggesting Leicester may need to sell before they buy this summer.

Would you like Spurs to sign Maddison?

Yes

Yes

No

No

And with the Foxes said to be open to offers for the likes of Maddison, we will be interested to see if Spurs do make a move given their only creative midfielders in Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele are clearly not in Antonio Conte’s plans.

Maddison enjoyed an impressive 2021/22 campaign where he netted 12 goals and provided eight assists in the Premier League alone, which we believe could be a great addition to Conte’s options.

It is apparent Conte is bolstering his squad this summer and given there was a real lack of goals coming from midfield last season, we will be interested to see if Gold is proven right.
