Newcastle United have an eye on the Burnley winger Maxwel Cornet this summer as they aim to bring in another wide player.
This has been suggested by TalkSPORT’s transfer guru Alex Crook whilst speaking on the radio channel to discuss the Toon’s summer business.
Eddie Howe’s men are now edging closer to their Premier Lague opener against Nottingham Forest next weekend with the same forward options they ended the 2021/22 campaign with.
The signing of Sven Botman was the last new face to come through the doors at St. James’ Park and caps off what has been a summer of defensive recruitment by the Newcastle board.
However, it seems as if Crook believes Dan Ashworth may have his eyes on the sort-after Burnley winger who has a £17.5m release clause in his contract:
“The name that was mentioned to me yesterday [Thursday] was that of Maxwel Cornet. We’ve spoken a lot about over the last month or so. He’s got a £17.5m release clause in his Burnley contract so wouldn’t be particularly expensive.
“Everton have had a loan bid rejected. They’ve signed Dwight McNeil now so you wonder if they will come back in again. I think Nottingham Forest have enquired. Would he be a good addition for Newcastle?”

At just £17.5m, this does seem like a deal which would actually make a lot of sense for the Toon this summer after Cornet enjoyed an impressive campaign last time out.

The Ivorian – hailed “invaluable” by Paul Robinson – was able to provide nine goals and one assist in the Premier League for Burnley last season and he has proven in the past he is capable of playing on the right side.
Reports have suggested Moussa Diaby was the club’s big summer target and with a move for him now off the table, could Cornet prove a good stop-gap?
Going off last season’s returns, Cornet certainly had a healthier return than any of Howe’s right-wingers, so if Newcastle do want to go back for Diaby next summer, we think Cornet could be a good option, unless they look to gamble on Miguel Almiron’s pre-season form.
