Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou is now desperate to bring in a new defensive midfielder this summer with just a couple of weeks until the campaign begins.

This has been suggested by the journalist Pete O’Rourke, who has spoken to This Is Futbol about the Bhoys hopes for the remainder of the transfer window.

Postecoglou will now have to plan for the new campaign without Nir Bitton, who has now departed Parkhead on a free transfer to return to his homeland of Israel.

Bitton played a prominent role in Postecoglou’s squad last season with 24 appearances to his name in the Scottish Premiership and 38 across all competitions (via Transfermarkt).

Having already brought in five permanent signings this summer, O’Rourke believes Postecoglou will be hoping their next arrival is a midfield enforcer:

I think Ange Postecoglou, he’s desperate to get in that defensive midfielder, supplement the squad for next season as well, because they obviously lost Nir Bitton at the end of last season as well.

“I think midfield reinforcements are a big priority for the Celtic boss right now.”

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

Celtic fans will certainly have wanted the club to prioritise the permanent additions of Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers – which they have done successfully.

However, now feels like the time when they need to start addressing areas of the squad which outright need upgrading in the coming weeks.

And a new defensive midfielder is certainly an area which we think should be high up on that list as Postecoglou will want to replicate last season’s stunning defensive performance.
