St. James’ Park was left silent on Friday night as Newcastle United’s Kieran Trippier went down with an injury scare in the first half.

This has been suggested by the reliable Toon correspondent Lee Ryder who was seriously impressed with the performance of the England international.

The 31-year-old led the Magpies out for their penultimate friendly of the summer against Serie A side Atalanta where Eddie Howe’s side ran out 1-0 victors.

However, it was not a smooth-sailing night for the right-back who found himself down with an injury issue which had the journalists in the press box worried too.

Although the defender did endure the injury scare, Ryder was left delighted with his performance as he went on to play the full 90 minutes and receive an 8/10 rating from The Chronicle reporter:

“Ran the game down the right-hand side with a captain’s display. United must keep him fit this term and there was near silence as he lay injured for a while in the first half, underlining that the crowd are well aware of his importance,” wrote Ryder.

TIF Thoughts on Ryder’s comments…

This will certainly have been a major concern for those in attendance at St. James’ Park last night with Trippier a big player in the project on Tyneside.

Are you worried by Trippier's injury record?

No

The Englishman hit the ground running in January when he made the move back to England and scored two goals in his six Premier League appearances (via Transfermarkt).

However, there lies a problem. Just six league appearances to his name was a massive disappointment and fans will be hoping that is not replicated in the upcoming campaign given they didn’t lose a league game with Trippier starting.
