Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy did not exactly impress on Friday night under the lights in their latest pre-season friendly clash against Atalanta.

Journalist for NewcastleWorld, Jordan Cronin, was left far from impressed with the 27-year-old who started the game for Eddie Howe in the front three.

Murphy lasted 82 minutes in front of over 40,000 Geordies on Tyneside where Howe replaced him in the later stages for Matty Longstaff.

One of the two main areas left for Newcastle to improve their squad this summer is at right-wing, however, they are yet to bring in any new attacking options.

And as the search goes on ever closer to the start of the new Premier League campaign, it seems Murphy did not impose himself as a serious option for Howe’s starting XI against Forest as Cronin awarded him just a 6/10 rating:

“Had a couple of promising runs forward but conceded possession numerous times,” Cronin wrote.

Last season was also not exactly a scintillating one from the winger with just the one goal and two assists to show for in his 33 Premier League appearances (via Transfermarkt).

Should Murphy be sold this summer?

The game against the Serie A side on Friday night was the Toon’s penultimate pre-season friendly before they kick off their campaign on Tyneside against Nottingham Forest.

However, it seems the chances of Murphy starting in that game next weekend may be under serious doubt now with the Englishman not exactly leaving a positive lasting impression.
