Newcastle United may have picked up an injury concern to Fabian Schar in Monday’s pre-season friendly against Mainz.

This has been relayed by reliable Toon correspondent Chris Waugh, who was reporting on the game for The Athletic live from Austria.

Eddie Howe’s side found themselves 1-0 down in the early stages of the second half in Kufstein, with the German Bundesliga side quickly netting after Schar’s departure.

However, the concern will likely be with the unplanned substitution forcing Schar off the pitch as the Swiss defender overstretched, which caught the attention of the medical department.

Dan Burn was brought on by Howe to replace the 30-year-old as the January signing partnered Jamaal Lascelles for the majority of the remaining minutes.

Waugh tweeted: “Fabian Schar is going off slightly earlier than planned. He appears to have overstretched a touch & #NUFC‘s medical staff bring him off as a precaution.

“Dan Burn, who was due to come on at the hour mark, comes on three minutes earlier, with Botman now to his right.”

TIF Thoughts on Waugh’s comments…

This is the last thing any team wants coming out of their pre-season friendlies and it will be a major frustration for Howe if this is an injury that sees Schar sidelined for a lengthy period of time.

However, if it was to happen in any position, perhaps the Toon are best prepared to take a hit to their centre-backs given the recent arrival of Botman.

Dan Burn impressed massively last season and it felt as if it could be a battle between him and Schar to partner Botman in the opener against Nottingham Forest.

Now it seems the decision could potentially be made a lot easier for Howe, but he will be hoping the injury to the Swiss defender is nothing serious.
