Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Ben Davies may not be fit enough to return in time for the first game of the new campaign.

The north London side return to action on 6th August with a game against Southampton and Alasdair Gold has issued a potentially worrying update on his YouTube channel regarding his injury status.

Davies played a huge role under Antonio Conte last summer, with the Welshman nailing down a spot as the left-sided centre-back, with 35 appearances already under the Italian.

But the 29-year-old’s pre-season came to a halt in South Korea after picking up an issue against Sevilla which saw him leave the country in a protective boot, but Conte remained optimistic he would be fit for the Saints clash.

However, in a week when the defender put pen to paper on an extended deal, Gold provided a concerning update on his availability for the league opener:

“Conte hopes he’ll be ready for the first game. It might be a bit tight, from what I’m hearing, but we’ll see how that goes. You never know. Maybe the new contract will boost his recovery.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

Davies, who Conte hailed as ‘fantastic’ last season, is clearly the main man on the left side of the back three at Spurs, with Fabio Paratici unable to land either of their top two targets in Alessandro Bastoni and Josko Gvardiol this summer.

If Davies is out, who should start at LCB?

Davinson Sanchez

However, it is reasons like this why recruitment was so important for Spurs this summer, with Clement Lenglet brought in to rival Davies for a starting spot in Conte’s XI.

With the Frenchman having not long been at the club, we do wonder whether he will be trusted so soon to start, with Davinson Sanchez playing at left-sided centre-back for the majority of their game on Saturday against Rangers.

As terrible as Sanchez is on the left, I have no faith in Lenglet. I didn’t want him and still don’t, certainly nowhere near the first team!
