Rangers: Joshua Barrie believes plans are in place for a goalkeeper signing next summer

Rangers’ goalkeeper contingency plan will likely see them bring in a new shot-stopper next summer.

That’s according to Rangers Review writer Joshua Barrie, sometimes seen on Sky Sports, who believes the club have a move for a new no.1 already ‘earmarked’ for next year.

The 2022/23 campaign only kicks off this weekend but already the journalist claims the Gers are putting plans in place to ensure the future of the position.

When Allan McGregor was introduced in the final minute of Rangers’ Scottish Cup final victory over Hearts back in May you would be forgiven for thinking it would be his 444th and final appearance however, the 40-year-old has since signed a one-year contract extension at the club and the man he replaced on that day, Jon McLaughlin, will rival the Ibrox icon for the no.1 jersey.

When asked on the Rangers Review YouTube channel who he would start Barrie said he would give McLaughlin the nod before claiming what Ross Wilson might have in mind for the long-term future of the role.

He said: “I think what will happen, my prediction is McLaughlin and McGregor might fight it out this season and Rangers will move to sign a really high-quality goalkeeper next summer.

“To improve on that position, you would have to go out and spend serious money – and maybe Rangers just have that earmarked for next summer.”

TIF Thoughts on Rangers and a goalkeeper…

Who should be Rangers no.1?

With this term most likely to be McGregor’s swansong and considering McLaughlin himself is 35, the Light Blues do need the position filled.

The third choice Robby McCrorie may only be 24 but he has only ever made two appearances for the side so perhaps the huge windfall received from the departures of Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo can be stashed away in order to bring in a considerable upgrade next summer.

Even better, if the club were to secure qualification for the Champions League towards the backend of the window a transfer for a goalkeeper could be brought forward.
