Daily Record journalist Mark Guidi has admitted that he would be ‘absolutely shocked’ if Allan McGregor doesn’t start for Rangers this weekend.

The Gers begin their quest to regain the Scottish Premiership title when they travel to Livingston in the season’s curtain-raiser this Saturday lunchtime.

When McGregor was introduced in the final minute of Rangers’ Scottish Cup final victory over Hearts back in May, you would’ve been forgiven for thinking it would be his final appearance for the Light Blues, however, the 40-year-old has since signed a one-year contract extension at the club.

Despite Rangers Review writer Jonny McFarlane’s plea for Jon McLaughlin to be installed as the No 1 this term, Guidi has stated that he will be stunned if McGregor doesn’t continue between the sticks.

When asked who he thought will start at Livingston on the Go Radio Football Show, he said: “For me, it’s got to be Allan McGregor. Experience and ability.

“Now, I’ve not seen him in pre-season. Going by what I know about both goalkeepers, then for me, it’s Allan McGregor all day long.

“I’d be shocked if it’s not Allan McGregor, I’d be absolutely shocked.”

Who should be Rangers no.1?

While McFarlane made the case that McLaughlin is better with the ball at his feet, Guidi is certain that the man who has kept 203 clean sheets in his Rangers career won’t be moved from between the sticks, and it makes for a very big decision for Van Bronckhorst to make.

The pair have shared responsibility during pre-season, with McLaughlin playing the full 90 minutes in Rangers’ impressive 3-1 win over West Ham United before McGregor stood in goal for the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, but it will be interesting to see who gets the nod in the first competitive game of the 2022/23 campaign.
