Commentator Derek Clark has claimed that the free transfer of Tom Lawrence to Rangers is a ‘fantastic bit of business’.

It was confirmed this week that the 28-year-old will be playing for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men next season, having now completed a move to the Scottish club.

Lawrence had spent the last five seasons with Derby County before making the switch on a free transfer due to his contract expiring with the English Championship outfit (via Transfermarkt).

In response to the news, Clark explained that he had been on commentary duty for a few of the attacker’s games, with the Welshman managing to score a ‘screamer’ on both occasions.

He took to Twitter to say: “Had the pleasure of commentating on Derby a couple of times… Tom Lawrence scored a screamer each time and stood out a mile. It’s a fantastic bit of business on a free.”

Lawrence has certainly shown his quality in the Championship over the years, having directly contributed to 90 goals (50 of his own and 40 assists) in 253 outings.

Indeed, playing on the left wing or more centrally, the Welshman showed his ability to score and assist last term, with 11 goals and five assists in the league.

Stats aside, he has clearly passed the eye test when it comes to Clark watching Lawrence in the flesh. And considering Rangers have picked him up on a free transfer, it certainly makes this deal seem all the sweeter.
