Journalist Mark Guidi has claimed that Rangers might have to cash in on Alfredo Morelos if he does not sign a new deal.

Morelos recently entered the final year of his contract at Rangers this summer. The Colombian signed for them in 2017, going on to make 224 appearances in all competitions, where he has netted 113 times and chipped in with 51 assists along the way.

The 26-year-old striker has been linked with a move away from the Scottish club, but Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst is hopeful that he will be signing a new contract with the club, meaning he will not be available to leave on a free transfer at the end of next term.

With Morelos’ contract set to expire at the end of next season, Guidi spoke on The Go Radio Football Show (25th July) and claimed that Rangers are at the stage where they might have to sell him in August if he does not agree to a new deal.

He said: “I think you’re at that stage with Morelos that he either signs a new deal, or you sell him in August. Because again, he’s too big an asset to leave, to let him go for nothing, this time next year.”

TIF Thoughts on Guidi’s comments…

Morelos has been in fine form for Rangers in recent seasons and last term posted 19 goal contributions in 26 Scottish Premiership games, so he would be a big miss for Van Bronckhorst if he was to leave the club this summer, which is presumably why the Dutch manager is so keen to pin him down to a new deal.

Rangers have the opportunity to play in the Champions League next term and if they do qualify for the group stages, that might well be enough to persuade the Colombian forward to stay at the club and sign a new contract.
