Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Tom Lawrence would be an exciting signing for Rangers this summer, especially on a free transfer.

There have been reports stating that Rangers are keen on bringing Lawrence to the Scottish Premiership this summer on a free transfer, but they face competition from several clubs.

Lawrence was part of Wayne Rooney’s Derby County side last season that got relegated to League One, and with him being out of contract, he is not expected to sign a new deal with the club. The Wales international netted 11 times and made five assists in 38 league games for the Rams.

With Lawrence out of the contract, O’Rourke spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that he would be an exciting transfer for the Scottish side, especially as he would come in on a free transfer.

“I think he would be an exciting signing for Rangers, especially on a free transfer.

“There’s not many better free transfers around if you’re looking at the players available. Tom Lawrence is a skilful player,” O’Rourke said.

TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…

It may not be a huge surprise if Lawrence decides against signing a new deal at Derby this summer with the club getting relegated to League One, and Rangers could be in with a chance of signing him as they can offer him European football – which is more than what their potential competitors can offer, as the other clubs interested in signing him play in the Championship.

Rangers fell just short in the Europa League last season and came second in the Scottish Premiership, so Giovanni van Bronckhorst will be hoping to bring in some new talent over the summer in the hope that they can go one step further and have a more successful season next term.

And with a World Cup on the horizon, a move to Scotland could aid his chances of returning to the squad, especially if he is playing in a European competition.
