Journalist Mark Guidi has claimed that Rangers qualifying for the Champions League will be the biggest payday in the club’s history.

Rangers have not qualified for the Champions League group stages since the 2010/11 season, and they are just four qualifying matches away from reaching that stage of the competition again for next season, which would be hugely beneficial financially for them.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side have signed seven players so far in this summer’s transfer window, and if they do qualify for the Champions League, they might be able to attract a higher calibre of player to sign for them before the window ends.

With Rangers potentially qualifying for the Champions League ahead of next season, Guidi spoke on The Go Radio Football Show (25th July) and claimed that it would be a ‘gamechanger’ for the Scottish club.

He said: “It’s a gamechanger. I mean genuinely, financially for the club, it’ll be the biggest payday in their history, by a distance.

“For 50,000 Rangers supporters, it’s a chance to get back in and see their team in the Champions League for the first time in more than a decade. And it’s a chance for the current players to go and enhance their reputations; for Giovanni van Bronckhorst to enhance his reputation even more.”

TIF Thoughts on Guidi’s comments…

It would be a massive thing for Rangers if they did qualify for the Champions League next season, but they have lost Calvin Bassey and Joe Aribo, who were both mainstays in the side last term, so Van Bronckhorst might be keen to get some more players through the door who will add some quality to his side.

The Ibrox club are already in a profit of around £16m this summer, so if they did qualify for the Champions League and acquired more funds, they could be set for a busy few weeks towards the end of the transfer window in terms of getting new players in.
