Chris Sutton has admitted he doesn’t see a future for Christopher Jullien at Celtic.

The centre-back was ruled out for 18 months when he collided with the post as he heroically cleared a goalbound effort in Celtic’s 3-0 win over Dundee United back in December 2020, but after an emotional return against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup in February, he failed to feature again and has been left surplus to requirements.

It looked as if the 6ft 4in ace was heading for Schalke before his transfer collapsed, and even amid Carl Starfelt’s injury, it doesn’t appear that Jullien will be called upon, as the Bhoys swooped to bring in Moritz Jenz from Lorient on loan last week.

For Sutton, he is convinced that Jullien has no further part to play at the club, with Ange Postecoglou seemingly not a fan.

Speaking on the Record Celtic podcast, he said: “In many respects, the centre-halves have to be the best player, because Ange Postecoglou’s style of play likes to overload in the midfield and forward areas, and that leaves the centre-halves having to defend on their own at times, and maybe Ange Postecoglou feels that Christopher Jullien isn’t capable enough to do that, but [it] looks like the decision has been made on him.”

The 29-year-old arrived in Glasgow for £7m from Toulouse back in 2019 and was a regular in the Hoops lineup under Neil Lennon, however, after just 16 minutes of action last term and defensive reinforcements arriving, it does look bleak for the Frenchman.

You could be sure that the Lennoxtown officials will be trying to cut a deal to get the defender off their books too given his £20k-per-week contract places him as the third-highest earner at the club, but you would think his future will become clearer by the time the transfer window closes.

In my opinion Julien has not shown Ange that he’s ready to fight for his place. If he had, he’d be included.
I like the big Frenchman and seriously wish he’d knuckle down and get on with it! I believe that on form, he is a better option than Starfelt. Starfelt settled into a good solid game last season and he did it with pure grit and determination. The fans had written him off, myself included, but he got those sleeves up and persevered until he became irreplaceable.
But Julien is a more complete footballer and just needs the grit and determination shown by Starfelt last season.
Now of course, the arrival of Janz means we have three quality central defenders plus a very sound, consistent and capable Stephen Welsh.
Come on Julien! Get the sleeves up! You were always a fan favourite and were a danger in the opponent’s penalty area at set pieces!
