Former Celtic ace Peter Grant believes that David Turnbull will be like a ‘new signing’ at Parkhead this season.

Last season, the Scottish midfielder was limited to just 25 Premiership appearances and 42 games in all competitions, but while he did manage to score 10 goals and produce eight assists, it was a largely frustrating campaign for the 23-year-old.

He sat out for a crunch three-month period of the season between December and March, missing 21 games in total for the Hoops as he struggled with a hamstring injury and started just twice following his return to fitness.

But after netting twice in pre-season and having already shown his goalscoring prowess, Grant is convinced he will be like a new addition to Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, he said:

“The one I’m looking forward to, and he’s not a new signing, but he’ll feel like a new signing if he stays fully fit, is David Turnbull.

“He’s a goalscoring midfielder and I think that’s very, very important now that a lot of teams play with one striker now, when you’ve got somebody that can score goals from the middle of the pitch, and if he stays fully fit, I think he could be a massive asset for Celtic and for Scotland.”

Former Bhoys hero John Hartson has previously compared the ex-Motherwell midfielder to Frank Lampard due to his eye for a goal.

The five-cap Scotland maestro won the PFA Young Player of the Year award for the 2020/21 campaign and also won the Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards at Celtic during his first season at the club.

He has already established himself, scoring 19 goals during his two seasons at Parkhead, as well as contributing with 16 assists in just 64 starts.

Only four players scored more times than the £5.85m-rated midfielder last term, which may suggest his fitness will be pivotal to Celtic’s chances of retaining their Scottish Premiership title.
