Speaking on ‘A Celtic State of Mind’, Brian Degning had his say on struggling Celtic winger Mikey Johnston.

Johnston played just 20 times in all competitions last season, and didn’t manage to score a single goal, and registered just one assist in an incredibly disappointing campaign. An academy graduate, many at the club would have been routing for Johnston. But, it must be said, his time may be running out after last season’s failure to impress.

Speaking on the ‘A Celtic State of Mind’ YouTube channel, Degning said“What I would suggest is, he’s a very good footballer, Mikey Johnston, he really is, I just don’t think he’s a Celtic player.” (11:01)

At just 23-years-old, of course, there’s still plenty of time for Johnston to have his say, and prove Degning wrong. But, last season, he didn’t show any of the needed signs of improvement. It must be said, too, that, with 20 games played, Johnston did receive enough time on the pitch to make something happen; that something just never reared its head, it seems.

TIF Thoughts on Mikey Johnston…

We see this situation with youngsters occasionally, and usually the solution is a loan move. A prime example of that is Tammy Abraham. The former Chelsea forward eventually became a player with Premier League quality after loan moves to the likes of Aston Villa and Derby County. Now, he is seen leading the line for Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.

Now, whilst Johnston wouldn’t be guaranteed to have the same success as Abraham, he looks unlikely to develop any further at Celtic, where things look slightly stagnated for him. As of right now, offers are yet to come in, but, if one does, then Johnston could benefit with a move.
