Podcast presenter and BBC Sport contributor Dave Azzopardi has suggested that Mario Vuskovic could solve Wolves’ need to sign a new centre-back.

According to Sky Germany (via One Football), the 20-year-old is wanted by the Premier League outfit, though they will face competition from three unnamed Bundesliga clubs as well.

Wolves will likely be in the market for a new central defender this summer, with Romain Saiss recently confirming his exit after six years at the club.

While speaking on the Talking Wolves channel, Azzopardi mentioned this need for a new signing, while wondering if Vuskovic could be the man to fill the hole left by Saiss.

The presenter said: “Another player, and a fairly new link that came about – it came from Sky Sports in Germany [on Friday] – is that Wolves are reportedly interested in Hamburg defender Mario Vuskovic.

“A Croatian defender, Croatian under-21. Very highly rated centre-back, a lot of the Hamburg fans have been talking about him, and it said that Wolves could get him for around €10m.

“A few other top Bundesliga sides are also looking at Vuskovic, so it’ll be interesting to see what else comes of that.

“So Wolves, again, need a centre-back. Maybe Vuskovic could be the player to be that man.”

TIF Thoughts on Mario Vuskovic and Wolves…

Wolverhampton Wanderers certainly seem to be targeting a new centre-back this summer, with David Carmo of Braga also recently being linked.

However, with a reported release clause of €40m (£34m) that deal might be a little tricky to pull off. But if Vuskovic is available for the €10m (£8.6m) fee being reported, that deal could be a lot more manageable, despite him being a ‘very important’ player.

The 20-year-old was a mainstay in the Hamburg team last season and his performances were clearly good enough to draw interest from a number of European sides.

Taking everything into account, it will be interesting to see if Wolves do indeed feel as though he could solve their defensive issues and follow that up with a genuine pursuit of the player.
