Sky Sports News reporter Michael Bridge has revealed that he has been told Gianluca Scamacca is the ‘real deal’.

The Hammers confirmed the signing of the Italian striker on Tuesday in a £30.5m deal from Serie A side Sassuolo.

It finally brings to an end David Moyes’ search for a striker who can ease the burden placed on the shoulders of Michail Antonio, who has been the club’s only recognised senior centre-forward since Sebastien Haller departed in January 2021.

Arsenal and PSG had both been credited with an interest in the 23-year-old earlier in the window, such is the calibre of player Scamacca could become – and Bridge has revealed the encouraging words he has heard out of Italy.

Speaking on Football Daily’s ‘Transfer Talk’ on Twitter Spaces, Bridge said: “I’ve been told by many Italian colleagues of mine, he is the real deal.

“He’s only 23, he might take a little while to get accustomed to the Premier League, but a few people who I really trust in Italy think he’s going to be a big success in the Premier League.”

After a breakout season for Scamacca in which he netted 16 Serie A goals in 36 appearances, averaging one every 135 minutes, he could well go on to be a force to be reckoned with in the top flight of English football.

He earned his full international debut last September and has emerged as Italy’s leading No 9.

At 6ft 5in, he has been compared to Zlatan Ibrahimovic due to his goalscoring prowess and size, while former Premier League striker Kevin Campbell has described his hold-up play as ‘brilliant‘ – but insists that he has his own style of play, and the Hammers fans will be hoping it brings success.
