Dan Lawless has claimed that the injury to Nayef Aguerd dampened his excitement ahead of Gianluca Scamacca’s arrival at West Ham United.
West Ham United have made four signings so far in this summer transfer window, with Aguerd joining from Stade Rennais for £30m, but it was recently announced that he is set for a spell on the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury in a pre-season friendly.
And while the Hammers are set for one of their new signings to miss the opening fixtures of the Premier League season, they confirmed the signing of Gianluca Scamacca from Sassuolo earlier this week.
However, Lawless took to Twitter prior to the Italian’s arrival in east London to state that he was not as excited as he would have been due to the injury of Aguerd and the lack of depth that they have in that area of the pitch.
He wrote: “This Aguerd news has dampened my excitement for Scamacca signing.
“When he is fit, it’s gonna take him a while to get match-fit. There’s been no sign of Ogbonna coming back any time soon, we could start the season with Cress/Johnson at CB.”

West Ham had just one natural striker in their squad last season and that was Michail Antonio, so it is nevertheless exciting for the Hammers faithful that they have splashed the cash on a new striker, but evidently, the injury to the new central defender has ruined the moment for Lawless.
Whenever a club sign a new player for a significant amount of money, the last thing they will want is for them to get injured in a pre-season fixture, because he was clearly brought into the club to resolve an issue, and his injury now means that West Ham are likely to go into the first fixture of the season with the same issues as before.
Hopefully for the Hammers, Scamacca can hit the ground running and make up for any shortcomings they experience at the back through the injury problems David Moyes’ are facing.
