Podcaster Dan Lawless has voiced his concern over the idea that West Ham United could be looking to play with a back five this season.

In the news recently, the Hammers have been linked with a possible move for Eintracht Frankfurt wing-back Filip Kostic, with David Moyes said to be ‘keen on the player’.

In reaction to this, Lawless has come to the conclusion that West Ham may well be looking to move from a back four to a back five next season – an idea that evidently does not please him.

Indeed, the West Ham Fan TV man took to Twitter to say: “First we tried to sign Raum now Kostic, it seems like Moyes is looking to move to a back 5 this season which I’m not sure how I feel about. How will Coufal/Johnson cope? They will probably do a respectable job but we need better than that. I’d rather we stuck with a back 4.”

TIF Thoughts on Filip Kostic and West Ham…

The Hammers have already signed Nayef Aguerd this summer, so that does give them an extra option in the middle of defence if Moyes does indeed want to add another player to his starting backline.

On top of that, Kostic would be a pretty exciting element to enter the team, having scored seven goals and provided 15 assists last term.

However, while Lawless fears that the wing-back could signal a change in formation, in reality, the 29-year-old plays in a very attacking manner and could easily come into the team as a wide midfielder or winger.

Even so, it seems as though the West Ham Fan TV presenter is concerned about the knock-on effect this possible transfer could have on other full-backs such as Ben Johnson and Vladimir Coufal, who both play in the more traditional right-back role as opposed to wingback.
