ExWHUemployee recently revealed that West Ham United have now missed out on possible left-back target Josh Doig after the player signed with Serie A outfit Hellas Verona.

The Hammers have been linked with several left-backs this summer including Oleksandr Zinchenko, Djibril Sibide, and David Raum, but have so far failed to bring in any of three and are currently left with just Aaron Cresswell and Arthur Masuaku.

Ex has now revealed that the East London outfit missed out on Doig, who the club were looking at, to Hellas Verona after the 20-year-old made the switch from Scottish Premier League side Hibernian.

He said on the Transfer Show, “So, Josh Doig has gone from Hibernian to Hellas Verona for an undisclosed fee. And I say West Ham has watched him a couple of times, but obviously, now he’s gone. He’s left back as well so might have been someone that we might have looked at but can’t now”. (1:04)

TIF Thoughts on Ex’s comments…

While Cresswell has proven himself to be a top-class player, he is now at the age of 32 and Masuaku has never hit the ground running at the Premier League side, meaning a fresh face at the position is becoming a huge area of need.

Doig has garnered a lot of praise last season, especially from teammate Lewis Stevenson who claimed the left-back “has potential to go to the top level. He is 6ft 3in, fast, and strong. Even just looking at him with his top off – without meaning to sound creepy – he looks like Ronaldo, with that kind of physique.”.

Being compared to a player of the standard of Ronaldo is incredible praise for a player of his age and this could end up being a huge miss for West Ham at this time. While the link has not been highly reported, being beaten to a signing by a Serie A club like Hellas Verona is not something fans will be happy about.

Should West Ham have signed Doig?
