It has been claimed that Tottenham Hotspur want to sign boyhood fan Sonny Perkins this summer.

The former West Ham United midfielder recently left the club – having been there since under-14 level – after turning down a contract offer, much to the frustration of the east London outfit.

As a result, the teenager is now available as a free agent and it seems as though Spurs are in the race for the 18-year-old, but will face stiff competition from Leeds United.

Indeed, while talking on The West Ham Way podcast, Hammers insider ExWHUemployee outlined as much, but did suggest that Perkins could join Tottenham as he actually supported them as a kid.

He explained: “I know Leeds were leading the chase for him, but then Tottenham – which is the club that he supported as a lad – had made a move for him.

“And I don’t know at the moment which club he’s going to favour. I still believe it’s Leeds. Leeds hold the position of power, because they are able to offer him a more direct route into the first team than Tottenham are.

“But I think he’s going to weigh up that decision.”

TIF Thoughts on Sonny Perkins and Spurs…

In their statement about Perkins’ exit, West Ham made their disappointment clear, writing: “The Club is disappointed with Perkins’ representatives and strongly believe he was approached to sign for another club which led to him asking to be released from his scholarship at West Ham United.

“West Ham United take this matter very seriously – we believe the rules and structures in place at the Football Association and Premier League should be upheld at all times.”

By the sounds of it, this other team that allegedly approached the youngster may well have been either Spurs or Leeds. And when Perkins does join a new club, that side could well be set for a few awkward talks with those at West Ham.

Even so, what all this does prove is just how highly rated the player is. And if Spurs can land him, it certainly seems as though they will be picking up a top talent.

With strong competition for the teenager’s signature, it will be interesting to see if Perkins’ support for Tottenham could be what swings his decision in their favour.
