Tottenham Hotspur could look to bring in Palmeiras and Uruguay left-back Joaquín Piquerez this summer, as the 23-year-old “fits the bill.”
That is according to journalist Pete O’Rourke who was speaking to This is Futbol about Tottenham’s transfer plans this summer.
Antonio Conte currently has two out-and-out left-backs at his disposal in Sergio Reguilón and Ben Davies, although the latter is more likely to play on the left side of a three at centre-back, so the club could ideally do with one more option could play at wing-back.
Ryan Sessegnon has also been used at left wing-back under Conte, but it is still thought that Tottenham would like more cover in this area.
The nine-time Uruguay international could fit that bill, having played as a left-back in 26 Palmeiras fixtures this season, according to Transfermarkt.
And O’Rourke believes that there’s a chance that Spurs could make a move for Piquerez before the window closes this summer, with the £2.7m-rated man potentially on the club’s radar.
“He’s an interesting target.
“I think he’s more of a left-back than a centre-back.
“The Palmeiras player maybe fits the bill and I’m sure he’s on Spurs’ radar, so if the right player becomes available, they could possibly look to bring in a left wing-back.”
TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments
Though O’Rourke’s comments don’t necessarily suggest that Piquerez is one of Tottenham’s primary targets for the remainder of the window, he does suggest that the club will be looking to bring in a left-back this summer.
Martin Charquero has stated that the Uruguayan is “very tempting” for European clubs, and we believe that this could be because he is likely to be a cheaper option than buying a wing-back from the European market.
We believe that it would be sensible for Spurs to pursue the signing of Piquerez this summer, as he would likely come at a relatively cheap price in comparison to those on the European market, meaning that he would almost be a risk-free signing if his transfer was not to work out the way they hoped.
