Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Barcelona outcast Memphis Depay this summer, it has been claimed.
Spurs recently made their sixth transfer of the summer after confirming Djed Spence’s arrival from Middlesbrough on Tuesday, but it does not look like they are done there as they have now been linked with a move for tricky forward Depay.
According to noted insider ExWHUemployee, the North London outfit is in the market for the player despite the fact he does not wish to leave the Catalan giants, but it would appear he has no future at the club after the signings of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski.
Ex said on The Transfer Show: “Tottenham are in the market for Memphis Depay again, the Dutch international, but he’ll leave the Nou Camp. Apparently, he doesn’t want to leave, but he’s been told that his future is bleak there.”
TIF Thoughts on Depay to Spurs…
Prior to the Spence signing, spending potentially a lot of money on a player like Depay may have felt like a waste of resources as they recently brought in Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison who both play in attacking areas.
However, now they have acquired the six players manager Antonio Conte wanted, they can afford to spend the rest of their transfer budget on luxury signings like Depay, who can add depth and top quality to the bench.
Depay, who has been labelled as ‘one of the best players‘ in European football by Barcelona teammate Riqui Puig, would do exactly this as he racked up 13 goals and two assists last season, while ranking in the 97th percentile for progressive carries and progressive passes received, as well as in the 94th for shot-creating actions and progressive carries per game compared to other forwards in Europe’s top five leagues.
It is currently unknown how much it could cost Spurs to bring the Dutch international to north London this summer, but with Barcelona’s financial problems and their recent acquisitions, they could get themselves a bargain.
