Tottenham Hotspur: Fabrizio Romano rubbishes talk of Memphis Depay interest

Image for Tottenham Hotspur: Fabrizio Romano rubbishes talk of Memphis Depay interest

Tottenham Hotspur do not hold an interest in the possibility of signing Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The transfer specialist has been speaking about what may lie ahead for the north London club in the coming weeks on the latest Here We Go podcast.

However, it seems a move for the Dutch forward is not on the cards this summer despite reports suggesting Spurs are monitoring his situation.

Depay certainly had his issues in the past when playing in England, having only managed to find the back of the net twice in his 33 Premier League appearances (via Transfermarkt).

Although it is believed Barcelona are open to selling the 28-year-old for a fee in the region of €20m (£17m) this summer, Romano does not think this is a deal which interests Spurs.

He said: “Many of you asking me about Man United or Tottenham for Memphis Depay. Tottenham are not interested in Depay. But let’s see what happens with other English or Spanish clubs, because at the moment, Depay is exploring options around Europe.

“But with Man United and Tottenham, at the moment, no contacts.”

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s comments…

It would feel like a strange move from Spurs if they were to go in for Depay this summer given they have recently sold Steven Bergwijn to Ajax.

Would Depay have been a good signing for Spurs?

Besides their nationality, the pair do offer similar versatility up top, although with more game time than Bergwijn, Depay has shown some better form in front of goal, with 12 league goals in La Liga compared to the former Spurs man, who scored just three times last term.

With Richarlison signing this summer, Spurs are not in a position where they need to sign any more forwards this summer, but if the right one comes up in the coming weeks, perhaps it could be an option.

Thank goodness for that. It’s bad enough we’ve brought in Lengle only to let Rodon leave, without buying more dead wood too.
