According to The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare, Tottenham Hotspur could still sign James Maddison this summer despite the club talking down the transfer recently.

While Spurs have enjoyed a tremendous summer transfer window so far with the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Djed Spence coming through the door, they might not be done there, with a few weeks of the window left.

Eccleshare believes that while they are currently playing down their interest, Spurs could still move to sign Maddison from Leicester City as they like the player, and the Foxes may end up believing they need to get whatever they can for Maddison as he only has two years left on his contract.

Eccleshare told Spurs YouTuber Chris Cowlin: “They’ve very much talked that down. The sense from them is that no, [he is] not someone they’re looking at.

“I wouldn’t rule it totally out, just because they’ve looked at him before, he’s a player they like, he’s only got two years left on his contract. We saw with Bissouma, obviously, he only had one year left on his contract, but there does come a point at which clubs of that standing have to be realistic and say this is our last chance, really, to get a big, big fee for this player.

“Based on that, might Leicester say his value is going to massively diminish by this time next year? So there’s nothing to say it’s going to happen… but we’ve got a month or so left and I think there might be a signing or two that Spurs make, that they can afford to leave a bit later and sort of call someone like Leicester’s bluff, so we’ll see on that one.”

TIF Thoughts on Eccleshare’s comments…

We think Maddison would be a wonderful signing for Spurs if they can pull it off, as he bagged an incredible 18 goals and 12 assists across all competitions for the Foxes last season, while he ranked in the 90th percentile for non-penalty goals and in the 88th for assists per game compared to other attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues (as per FBref).

As Eccleshare states, Leicester may not want to sell Maddison, but considering it doesn’t look like he’ll sign a new contract at the club, they might look at what happened with Bissouma at Brighton & Hove Albion and opt to cash in on their star in order to bring in as much money as they can to reinvest into the squad – which they will need to do when Maddison inevitably leaves.

Thankfully for Spurs, they have already done their essential business this summer and bringing in any other signings will just be a luxury, especially one like Maddison.

Their good business also allows them to wait and see if Leicester will fold and end up listening to offers for their star man, so Spurs are very much in the driving seat this summer.

If you believe the free advert funded football sites that pollute the internet Leicester won’t have enough players to field a team when the Premier League starts next week. Most of it is made up rubbish. Yes, these sites tell porkies in order that we continue clicking on their sites earning them revenue.
