Tottenham Hotspur have now made a major breakthrough in their interest for Middlesbrough right wing-back Djed Spence.

This is according to reliable Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold, who has been speaking on his latest YouTube video to provide the latest transfer update.

A proposed deal for Spence has now been going on for weeks, with the two sides struggling to agree on a fee for the player.

Reports have suggested it would take an offer worth around £20m in total to prise the 21-year-old away from the Riverside Stadium, with the player believed to be pushing for the move.

With Spurs – and Gold – currently in South Korea for their pre-season tour, the journalist provided the latest, with a medical potentially taking place as early as Friday.

He said: “So in the hours since I said that [there was no update], Spurs have made a breakthrough, and it’s with Djed Spence, which is fantastic news. And what it is, is they are very close to getting that deal done.

“There’s been a real breakthrough this afternoon [Thursday], UK time – tonight, Korea time. And it’s close enough that the medical should be done within the next 48 hours, or expected to be begun in the next 48 hours, potentially even as early as tomorrow [Friday], because the two clubs have finally come to an agreement on young Djed Spence.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

This is huge for Spurs and Antonio Conte. Six signings are now all but sealed before the Lilywhites even play their second pre-season game and the Italian’s wishlist is now fully ticked.

It has been apparent Spence has been the main target for Spurs in that position, with negotiations having gone on for a long period of time.

Spence could be in for a rude awakening fitness-wise, having been given an extended holiday by Boro whilst the Spurs squad endure lung-busting training under Conte.

However, the Englishman could be available for next week’s trip to Scotland as the Lilywhites take on Rangers at Ibrox in their penultimate friendly clash.

Now, with the main six positions ticked off, we will be interested to see where Spurs look next to improve their options. But with just a few weeks until the Premier League restarts, Spurs certainly sit in a good position.
