Journalist Dean Jones recently claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s new signing Djed Spence is the future at the right wing-back position – but doubts he will start at the beginning of the season.
The north London side recently confirmed the signing of former Middlesbrough starlet Spence on Tuesday, making the Englishman their sixth signing of the summer and continuing their impressive form in the transfer window under Antonio Conte.
While the signing is a promising one, Jones believes that Spence will not start the season in the first XI for Spurs, but he will become the main man for Conte’s side because the Italian wants him for a reason.
Speaking prior to the deal’s confirmation on the Fantasy Premier League-themed Chasing Green Arrows show, Jones said: “This guy will play that right wing-back role.
“They’re signing Djed Spence for a reason. He’s the guy that they expect to become the regular right wing-back, and by all accounts, he can do it. He had a good season last year, we’ll have to see how he steps up obviously into the Premier League.
“I’m not sure he’ll start the season, that’s the other thing to consider here… but by GW4 or something, he’s probably going to be in a lot of teams.”

Spurs have improved their defence impeccably so far this summer with the acquisitions of Spence, Ivan Perisic and Clement Lenglet to add to the likes of Matt Doherty, Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Lucas Moura – who was recently tipped to play wing-back by Conte.
It is understandable why Jones believes Spence will not start the season as he has come in while the squad are on their pre-season tour, and therefore, players ahead of him like Doherty and Moura have a step up in terms of fitness and cohesion within the side.
However, Spence certainly does look like the future in that the position being only 21 years old and coming off the back of his impressive season at Nottingham Forest last year. During their promotion campaign, Spence bagged three goals and five assists for the Reds.
Spence, who has been labelled as ‘incredible’, has a lot of time to embed himself into the first team and culture under Conte, so if he doesn’t start the season, it won’t be as big of a problem because he is very much one for the future, and they have cover until he is ready.
