Tottenham Hotspur could be set to make Cristian Romero’s move to north London permanent in the early stages of August.

This has been suggested by reliable Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold, who has been discussing the Argentinian’s future on his latest YouTube video.

Romero was brought to N17 last summer on an initial loan deal with the option to make it permanent, however, the deal was expected to go through, with a five-year contract agreed upon by all parties.

With the defender still not being announced as a permanent signing by the club, Gold has questioned whether the initial loan deal was on a one-year basis, rather than a season-long agreement.

With this in mind, Gold highlighted that it was on 6th August 2021 when Romero was brought to Spurs from Atalanta, which may suggest a rough idea of when Spurs could confirm his permanent future in north London.

He said: “So what I understand about what happens next is that it will turn into a permanent move on a specific date that hasn’t actually happened yet. I think it’s soon.

“And when it does, there will be a full announcement from the club to say it has. This next bit is purely me guessing – I wonder, I think he was signed on August 6th, so I wonder whether it would be exactly a year on; whether it’d be a year’s loan rather than a season loan.

“So whether that means on August 6th or whether it would have to be the next day, August 7th, I don’t know.

“Keep an eye on that one, but nothing to worry about. It’s done. Like I say, the conditions have all been met anyway, from what I understand, so it’s one that will go through.”

TIF Thoughts on Gold’s comments…

There should be little concern from Spurs fans as to whether Romero’s move will be made permanent, with even Antonio Conte suggesting in a previous press conference the Argentinian is here to stay.

No

And we think this will be a significant addition for the Lilywhites for years, with the 23-year-old already receiving praise for his impact as part of Conte’s backline.

If Spurs needed any further encouragement that Romero is here to stay, the centre-back recently changed his shirt number to his favourite number 17, which he has worn throughout his career.

Given Spurs have had difficulties in landing their main targets at left-sided centre-back this summer, retaining Romero for the coming years will be a big boost for Conte given he has played almost every minute under the Italian when fit.
