Dean Jones has claimed on the Chasing Green Arrows YouTube channel that he can’t see Matt Doherty leaving Tottenham Hotspur.

It has been an up-and-down time for Doherty during his Tottenham days, having been signed by Jose Mourinho but never managing to nail down a regular first-team spot under the Portuguese boss or his successor, Nuno Espirito Santo.

However, under Antonio Conte, he has appeared to have won over the Italian boss, only for a cruciate ligament injury to see his season brought to a premature end, although that hasn’t stopped TalkSport claiming (via Football.London) he could still depart this summer.

Jones, however, admits that people in the know at Spurs don’t expect a Doherty exit.

He said: “I’d be very, very surprised if Doherty left Spurs. I mean, he is a really senior player within that squad and I think one of the important things about him is not necessarily what we see of him within a 90 minutes, but deeper-lying than that, he’s very close with the likes of Harry Kane.

Should Spurs sell Doherty?

Yes!

Yes!

No!

No!

“He’s a player that works very hard in training, he’s a really good professional and he’s a decent player – he’s decent, he’s versatile and he’s worth having around the squad.

“So I did actually check this out yesterday because it’s been doing the rounds that Doherty could go, and those in the know at Spurs seem to think it’s highly unlikely that Doherty would go.”

TIF Thoughts on Doherty’s Spurs future…

Given that fellow right-back Emerson Royal has been tipped with a summer exit, it would be quite a shock to see both Doherty and the Brazilian depart in the same transfer window, leaving very few options in that department.

How well do you know where these Spurs signings came from? Take our quiz to find out! Firstly, where did Dimitar Berbatov arrive from?

There has been talk of Djed Spence arriving at Spurs this summer, which would provide Doherty ample competition, while the Republic of Ireland international could also be a mentor to the youngster, helping him to develop in the Antonio Conte system and the Premier League.

However, reports coming out of South Korea and Spurs’ pre-season tour have claimed that Conte is not happy with Doherty for not moving the ball quickly enough in training, which also follows claims that the defender has been told that he’s free to leave this summer.
