Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are the frontrunners to sign Pau Torres in this summer transfer window.
There have been recent reports stating that Pau Torres has been on the radar of Premier League outfit Tottenham for the majority of the transfer window, but they face competition for his services as Manchester United and Chelsea are also interested in him.
Giovani Lo Celso spent the second half on loan with Villarreal last season, so he could be involved as part of a swap deal with Torres who could sign for Spurs, and Lo Celso sign for the La Liga side on a permanent deal.
With several clubs showing interest in Torres this summer, O’Rourke spoke to GiveMeSport and claimed that Spurs are the frontrunners in the race to sign him.
“I think it would be fair to say that Spurs will be the frontrunners if it came down to the two clubs to sign Pau Torres. Champions League football will be a big carrot for the Spain international to bring him to England.
“Also, if Manchester United were to sign Lisandro Martinez, that means maybe Pau Torres is not at the top of their agenda right now either. If Tottenham were to move for Pau Torres, I think they would be pretty confident that they might be able to get a deal done,” O’Rourke said.
TIF Thoughts on O’Rourke’s comments…
Spurs have recently announced their fifth signing of the summer transfer window, with Clement Lenglet joining the North London club on a loan deal from Barcelona, but could Antionio Conte still be looking to improve his defensive line?
Do you think Spurs need Torres?YesNo |
Conte is making serious moves this summer, as Spurs are also close to signing Djed Spence from Middlesbrough, but with Lo Celso potentially a pawn in a move for Torres, this could reduce the potential fee that Spurs will have to pay.
If Spurs are able to add another defender of Torres’ calibre, we think it would be yet another huge indication of the direction Spurs are looking to head towards next season.
And it seems those around Spurs would feel he could be a big addition, with the Spurs insider John Wenham hailing the Spanish defender: “Torres would be a huge upgrade for our defence,” he told Football Insider.
