Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the likelihood of Tottenham Hotspur signing Barcelona forward Memphis Depay this summer.

The Dutchman was a constant feature for Xavi last season, scoring 13 goals, and making a further two assists in 37 appearances in all competitions. Following the signing of Robert Lewandowski, alongside the January arrival of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, however, Depay may see his game time become limited, potentially leaving the door open for a move.

Speaking to GiveMeSport about the situation, Romano denied that Spurs have made a move, saying: “For Depay, at the moment, I’m told there has been no bid from Tottenham.”

With that said, Depay may well find himself staying at Barcelona for the upcoming season. Given the amount of game-time he received last season, Xavi clearly trusts the Dutchman. And, now, it’s just about building that trust further if he stays put.

Interestingly, it was claimed that Spurs had placed a bid for the attacker, but this doesn’t appear to be true.

TIF Thoughts on Romano’s Comments…

Romano’s comments don’t come as a great surprise when you consider the amount of business that Spurs have already done this summer. Antonio Conte has already welcomed six new arrivals ahead of the new Premier League campaign, including former Everton forward Richarlison.

The fact is, it would make little sense for Spurs to sign Depay when they’ve just splashed the cash on Richarlison, who should solve their depth issue in the forward position. So, for now, we don’t see the Barcelona man making the move to North London anytime soon.

Ahead of next season, Conte has built a squad capable of causing upsets, with the depth to potentially compete on all fronts.
